Gareth Kane, Director
Gareth has worked with a vast range of clients from micro companies through to trans-national corporations, across many sectors. He is an engaging public speaker, an experienced facilitator of events, and writes regularly on sustainability issues. Gareth is an approved Envirowise adviser, a reviewer of EU Interreg Projects, a co-ordinating reviewer of consultancy outputs for the UK Government and has been appointed to the pool of experts for the URBACT EU urban development programme.
He was previously the Centre Manager of the Clean Environment Management Centre (CLEMANCE) at the University of Teesside. He built the Centre from nothing to the current team of 14, bringing in substantial public sector funding and commercial contracts. CLEMANCE specialises in waste, energy, bioremediation and eco-product development/marketing. Gareth left the Centre in rude health, fulfilling his main objective: to build CLEMANCE to last. His biggest achievement was bringing the concept of ‘industrial symbiosis’ (one man’s waste being another’s raw material) to the North East, initially by conceiving and delivering the Tees Valley Industrial Symbiosis Programme (TVISP). TVISP engaged over 90 businesses and diverted over 150 000T of ‘waste’ from landfill, and delivering £millions to participants in economic terms. The project evolved into the North East section of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) which has diverted even larger amounts of material and continues to deliver substantial economic and regeneration benefits.

Joanne Bennison, Associate
Joanne is one of the key figures in the Environmental Sector in the North East of England, having co-ordinated the Environmental Industries Federation for many years. Now, having set up her own environmental consultancy, Daxi Environmental, she is working with Terra Infirma on the North Tyneside Resource Efficiency Club and on a number of other projects under development.
Dr Karen Johnson, Associate
Karen is a lecturer in Environmental Engineering at Durham University. Her work has a strong emphasis on using ‘wastes’ as resources. To date, much of her research has focussed on the passive treatment of contaminated waters and soils using ‘wastes’ such as secondary aggregates in place of primary aggregates. Karen has a track record of multi-disciplinary projects collaborating both with industry, regulatory authorities and science departments. Karen provides scientific support (and the occasional student) to Terra Infirma.
