On Demand: Sustainability Strategy Live! (& Coming Attractions)

On Wednesday, as a bit of an experiment, I did a session on Sustainability Strategy using Facebook Live. I only got a handful of viewers live, and disappointingly no questions, but the recording has had many dozens of views since and some very positive feedback.

Here's the recording:

So, what have I learned?

Despite the extra hassle in signing up and downloading a viewer, people seem to prefer signing up to one of my Weber-Hosted Green Academy webinars – maybe it is seen as more business-like during office hours. Maybe you're all blocked from Facebook at the office.

But the convenience means I can broadcast value at the drop of a hat, so I'm working up the idea of using Facebook Live for some short sharp bite-sized sessions. If anyone catches them and asks a question, then great, but the main aim will be for people watching it as and when suits them.

To get these, send me a friend request on Facebook - you can find me here: https://www.facebook.com/gareth.kane.1612

Green Jujitsu Culture Change Webinar Recording

We had a fantastic webinar on my Green Jujitsu webinar on Friday afternoon, featuring at least three FTSE100 or equivalent company attendees. If you want to catch the webinar then click on this link. You will have to download a Webex player to do so - I will endeavour to get a YouTube version up later this week.

The eBook itself, Green Jujitsu, is available from Dõ Sustainability.

Speaking of eBooks, both my previous books The Three Secrets of Green Business and The Green Executive are now available in Kindle format from Amazon. I'm very excited about this as the shift from stuff (paper, card, glue) to data is a key principle in both books.

Last week I also saw The Green Executive back on the shelves in Waterstones, so keep an eye out for it if you want a browse!

The Green Executive Launch Events

My second book, The Green Executive is formally published on Friday next week - 20th May. It seems like an eternity since I started it - I think the first of the 18 'View from the Front Line' interviews were done 2 years ago and the manuscript was pretty much complete last July.

The central premise of the book is that 'green' has shifted from a management issue to a leadership priority, yet research suggests that executives feel ill-equipped for the challenge. The book provides a roadmap for this new breed of Green Executives.

To mark the book's birth, I'm holding online and offline events.

20th May 2011, Webcasts: The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Green Business Leaders. I'm running two sessions at 11am and 2pm - e-mail us to register, making sure you tell us which session you want to take part in.

14th June 2011, Formal Launch Event, Newcastle University Business School, Newcastle upon Tyne, 17:00 for 17:30 with drinks and nibbles afterwards. Again, e-mail us to register.

BTW, this month's Low Carbon Agenda contains loads of content and free downloads relating to The Green Executive. Check it out.

Here's some of the kind words people have said about the book:

“There are too many out there making it up as they go along. Reading the Green Executive will help you see the opportunity amongst the bullshit.”

Dr Stan Higgins, CEO, North East Process Industry Cluster

“It is most refreshing to read a book in which opinions and advice are supported by facts and figures from authoritative sources.  As a practical handbook it deserves to be read and heeded by executives from across the spectrum.”

Professor Dermot Roddy C.Eng., FIET, FRSA
Science City Professor of Energy
Director, Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research

“A comprehensive, practical and up-to-date view of art of the possible in sustainable business. Built on the author’s insights and those of other practitioners it provides a superb reference for businesses. Doing nothing is no longer an option!”

Ted Shann, Practice Partner, Wipro Technologies

Getting used to new ways of working

Our green business webinar series is proving extremely popular - we've had to close the session to all but full paying customers. But one issue that has struck me is that many inquirers are nervous about the technology. Frankly, that's my job! But it is interesting that this way of working is not better known and trusted in our supposedly knowledge based economy.

It demonstrates once again that culture change is imperative to delivering sustainability in organisations. Virtual working techniques - remote working, teleconferencing, webinars etc - are key tools in the sustainability toolbox, cutting the need for both travel and carbon intensive office space. However, you can invest in all the technology you want, but it'll be a waste of money if people don't use it. The reasons are legion: old habits die hard, fear of the new, not wanting to be first, the time investment to learn the ropes.

If you are in senior position in a large organisation, you can overcome some of this reticence by simply insisting on, say, a teleconference rather than bringing staff from around the country to a monthly meeting, or encouraging working from home by instigating hot desking at the office. If you are a lesser mortal, it will take some more subtle techniques, but using the technology yourself and taking the time to hand hold others will help.

Webinars are very low carbon - we have registrants from around the world who can participate from the comfort of their sofa (see pic...). I like to think that, as well as training people in the theory of green business, we'll be giving them some practical experience too!

Happy 2011!

So the Christmas decorations are coming down, the cards heading for the recycling bins and life starts returning to normal. I hope you all had a great festive holiday and that Santa Claus brought you what you wanted. For the first year ever, I really did want, and got, new socks. I also managed to be fast asleep by 23:55 on New Year's Eve - what a lightweight I have become!

But I'm extremely excited about 2011. Last year was challenging for me personally with the new baby and two elections (local and general) requiring a lot of my energy, but it was all a lot of fun and the business did pretty well regardless.

Here are some of the reasons why I'm looking forward to 2011:

  • My second book, The Green Executive, will be out on 20 May (part of the reason I'm working today - a bank holiday in the UK - is to review and approve the copy editor's work). The book covers the strategic and leadership requirements of a green business and features 18 interviews with leading corporate sustainability experts.
  • We're launching our Green Business Webinar series on 2 Feb. These 10 sessions will provide a cost-effective, time-efficient and low carbon way to develop your skills. More details next week.
  • We're developing a diagnostic tool for medium/large businesses and expect to be trialling it in Feb/Mar for launch thereafter.
  • There is a whole raft of client projects in the offing including developing industrial ecology/symbiosis links in the forestry/wood/pulp industries and lots of training courses.

So, I hope you will come with us into this thrilling period - by subscribing to these blog posts (hit the big orange button) and/or The Low Carbon Agenda. By the way, the first edition of the latter will feature a planning process for 2011 and the answers to the fiendishly difficult low carbon quiz (nobody got all six questions right). Keep it green!

    Quick wins

    If your organisation is new to the whole idea of going green, then the best thing to do is get started and quickly show some early wins. Every organisation has some easy-to-fix but significant environmental opportunities, so before you get bogged down in analysing, strategy writing and designing systems, get out there and get stuck in.

    The benefits of this approach over building a bureaucracy are:

    1. You get tangible good news stories to show other stakeholders (senior management, other staff, cynics);

    2. You get the big mo' - people can see what's happening and may join in;

    3. You learn about your businesses, how it really operates and what the real problems and barriers are;

    4. You have freedom to try lots of approaches, make a few mistakes and learn practical lessons.

    The carbon footprinting, environmental management systems and strategy can come later or, better still, worked up in parallel, so you can incorporate the lessons learnt from the quick wins. But get some momentum going and sustain it.

    If you want to learn more about how to get started, plus dozens of practical hints and tips, I'm running a webinar on Quick Wins in Cutting Carbon tomorrow at 14:00BST - there's a nominal charge of £45+VAT to take part - a bargain for what you will learn!
