About Us

Terra Infirma’s mission is to help organisations gain all the advantages of taking a proactive approach to environmental and sustainability issues. The central ethos of our approach is to see this agenda as a range of opportunities rather than a series of threats. Our specialities are:

  • Sustainability Strategy

  • Employee Engagement for Sustainability

  • CPD for Sustainability Professionals

Terra Infirma was established in 2006 by Gareth Kane, a leading sustainability expert. The company was singled out for praise in 2011 by the UK Environment Minister Caroline Spelman. In 2013, Terra Infirma Ltd was shortlisted for Green Consultancy of the Year at the Business Green Leader Awards.

Gareth Kane, Director of Terra Infirma Ltd

Gareth Kane is one of the UK’s foremost sustainability and corporate social responsibility practitioners. He is the author of five books on sustainability including The Green Executive and Green Jujitsu. He hosts the Net Zero Business Academy online training course, the Net Zero Business Podcast and the Corporate Sustainability Mastermind Group (CoSM), a peer-to-peer learning group for Sustainability practitioners from leading organisations.

In parallel to his professional career, Gareth has 21 years’ experience as a Newcastle City Councillor. For his first 7 years, he served as deputy Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, during which time Newcastle was twice declared the UK’s Most Sustainable City by Forum for the Future. For 13 years he was Opposition Spokesperson for Environment and Sustainability with an estimable reputation for holding the administration to account, driving progress on a number of key issues for example climate resilience and EV charging.

Gareth is a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a Chartered Engineer.

If simplicity really is the ultimate sophistication, Gareth Kane must be the Leonardo di Vinci of environmental management.

Associates

Supporting Gareth is a small team of trusted associates. For every project we put together a bespoke project team, enhancing our offering with specialist services including:

  • Environmental management systems (eg ISO14001, BS8555 and EMAS);

  • Green Marketing;

  • Advanced energy assessment and management;

  • Life cycle assessments and carbon footprints; and

  • Contaminated land remediation.

Our Approach

All of our work revolves around the pragmatic principle that Sustainability must be tailored to work for the organisation concerned so it enhances overall business success:

  • In our strategy work, we build each strategy upon the foundation of your organisation’s business case for Sustainability; Strategy

  • In our employee engagement work, we use Green Jujitsu to reframe Sustainability to work with the dominant culture in the organisation;

  • In our professional development, we give as much emphasis in applying the ideas to your organisation as the ideas themselves.

This tailored, collaborative approach delivers maximum lasting value for our clients.

Gareth Kane’s approach is fresh, engaging and highly effective. He understands that getting people involved is the fastest route to secure their commitment to sustainability and has the tools and skills to make that happen.
