Some Like It (Very) Hot: Prof Jan Rosenow on Decarbonising ‘Hard to Abate’ Industries
The future of heavy industry in a low carbon world has recently been hitting the headlines with the demise or near demise of several UK steelworks being blamed on that bogeyman of the reactionary right, Net Zero. But what is the scope for decarbonising high temperature processes? If there’s one person who knows, it’s Professor Jan Rosenow of Oxford University who believes that far more of industry can be electrified, and thus decarbonised, than most people think.
Here’s what Jan and I discuss:
- The scope for electrification of low, medium and high temperature processes
- Novel technologies including high temperature heat pumps and electro-thermal storage
- Energy efficiency and the rebound effect (aka Jevons Paradox)
- How electrification can be 4-5x more efficient than gas but how the ‘spark gap’ is still hindering progress
- Jan’s top 4 policy asks to decarbonise heavy industry
The excellent Some Like It Hot report that Jan co-wrote (and I used as a cheat sheet during our discussion…) is available here.
