The Battery Age: BESS, EV Power Pack Reuse and V2G with Matthew Lumsden, Connected Energy
We’re definitely living in the battery age. We wouldn’t have smartphones, tablets or wafer thin laptops without the lithium ion battery – and the same technology took electric vehicles from the trundling milk floats of my youth to the sleek supercars of today. But did you know that the biggest single addition to the global power system last year was battery storage?
This week’s guest, Matthew Lumsden of Connected Energy, has a unique take on the battery economy. He takes EV batteries just as their performance is starting to tail off, and repurposes them as static Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), vastly extending their useful life. We talk the BESS business model, the reusing EV batteries and touch on Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology as well. A fascinating view from the frontline of a fast-moving sector!
