How Green is Your Green Electricity Tariff Really? with Killian Daly, Energy Tag
Like most, I thought Scope 2 emissions were the easiest to calculate – take your power bill and multiply the number of units by the national carbon intensity factor for the grid. Simple?
So I thought until Killian Daly came on the pod and disabused me of this assumption. Killian explains that, as we electrify and more renewables come onto the grid, the timing of consumption is hugely important – one hour the grid could be almost entirely carbon-free, the next it could be several times more carbon intensive. This has massive implications for green energy tariffs, your carbon footprint and when you should consume electricity. You can almost hear my brain whirring trying to keep up!
