I’ve produced this PESTLE analysis of the Political, Environmental, Social, Technological, Legal, Economic mega trends which could have an impact on sustainability strategies. I produced it for this week’s Corporate Sustainability Mastermind Group, but thought some readers may find it useful, so here it is!
Thanks. Yes, useful. Especially heuristic value. A few suggestions:
Economic: trade barriers/protectionism risk; risk of inflation (quantitative easing etc.); pension reform; organised crime/corruption. Also two that might change the picture/make it less static: (a) entrepreneurship; (b) R&D.
Political: ‘Arab spring’; add M (for Mexico) to BRICs
Tech: mobile web; cloud computing
More broadly:should PESTLE (which I think grew out of PEST) morph into EPISTLE where I = ideas (there are general ideas that can’t be reduced to any one of the 6 categories e.g. convergence, openness.

BTW Mexico is one of the ‘Next 11’, so it is in there.

This is a great tool; and wonderful that you are sharing it. I have a couple of suggestions for additions and one modification. I’m not sure which countries are captured under the “Next 11”, but continental Africa should be recognized for a number of reasons that cut across more than one of the PESTLE categories. Under Social, would you consider replacing “women’s emancipation” with “Gender parity/equality”? Emancipation seems to be a bit dated-thankfully to another century! I believe “Diversity” at a societal level and by extension into the workplace and boardrooms is also an important consideration. In light of the adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011 and the move by several regional governments to encourage compliance with the principles, I think the PESTLE could benefit from a reference to them. Finally, I think growing recognition of the value of integrated reporting bears some mention.
