Why the ‘I’ word is key to Sustainability
No, not that one.
It’s never about ‘I’ when it comes to Sustainability, it’s all about them… and the best way to get them engaged in Sustainability is to involve them.
I (whoops) used to do the whole Powerpoint plus questions thing and, as you know if you’ve done it, that deadly silence when you hit the last slide means little or no engagement. Last week, I had the senior management team of a major organisation developing visions of Sustainability and plotting a path to get there. No problems getting commitment.
My heart really sang when one group proposed co-creating solutions with employees in every department. This will create a cascade of ownership down through the reporting structure (backed up by the insertion of Sustainability targets in the personal objectives of key individuals.
The most important lesson is that, whether you are an internal or external Sustainability practitioner, you don’t need to design a Sustainable organisation – get them to do it instead. Involve them.
