Adapt or die: why decarbonisation is no longer enough to save us with Rupert Read
This post goes live as wildfires ravage Los Angeles, parts of the UK are clearing up after floods and we’re all still traumatised by the images of the deadly flash floods in Valencia. The trends look grim – according to the World Meterological Organisation, the number of disasters has increased by a factor of five over the past 50 years, driven by climate change. Even if we cut carbon emissions to zero tomorrow, there’s a whole load of trouble already baked into the system. So why aren’t we investing more in climate adaptation?
This is the question I discuss with Rupert Read, co-author of a new book, Transformative Adaptation, but best known as the public face of Extinction Rebellion in its heyday. Rupert explains why adaptation should be given equal status to decarbonisation, the limitations of current ‘shallow, defensive’ adaptation and how adaptation could actually help stimulate decarbonisation efforts by focussing minds.
This is a must watch/listen for anybody involved in tackling climate change.
