Ask Gareth: Do I need a better poster?

28th March 2014 Uncategorized 13 Comments

In this edition of Ask Gareth, I discuss the limitations of telling employees to behave in a more sustainable manner – in this case to travel less – and present some ideas of how to embed sustainability into the fabric of the organisation.

    Sounds good and well presented.
What about commuting? A lot of people seem to think nothing of commuting large distances, even to low paid jobs. I once suggested that this ought to be a criteria in job selection, to which you commented that this would be illegal or some such words. (It could still be a criteria but unspoken!).

I think I might have to reverse ferret on that one, Peter! A quick Google suggests that employers can specify people live in a certain area – unfortunately I can’t get chapter and verse on it. Not sure either what would happen if an employee moved outside the stipulated zone – would it be unfair dismissal if you sacked them? I’ll have to dig deeper!

Re. restricting short commutes, some employers do not provide on-site parking permits/spaces for people who live less than 5 miles from work, as determined by household bills etc. Simple!

Interesting one, Stephen, but presumably they provide special passes for those with mobility problems etc?
