What makes a good podcast guest? Please tell me!
As the Net Zero Business Podcast starts to gain traction in a crowded field, I’m starting to get PR companies pushing their clients forward as potential guests. This makes a welcome change from me hassling people to take part, but it does the beg the question, who do I accept and who do I turn down?
This is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. I’m often wrong-footed by which guests get big audiences and who doesn’t – one of my favourite guests is high profile, great company and had plenty of interesting things to say, but languishes towards the bottom of the ratings. Episodes where I felt I didn’t help the guest to shine rank way higher. Clearly, I’m not the best judge.
I’ve only said “no thanks” to requests twice. One I judged to be an attempt at greenwash, the other seemed a little confused about nature of the pod. From a personal point of view, I haven’t regretted any guests I’ve actually interviewed (just how I’ve interviewed them), so I do feel a little guilty at saying no to these two. Should I have given them a go? Is it ethical to interview someone and not publish if it doesn’t work out?
So, what do you, the audience want? What topics would you like to hear about? Are there any important sectors we haven’t covered? Do you want to listen to personal experiences or opinions on the topics of the day? Do you prefer hearing from the rock stars of Sustainability or new voices? Please let us know either in the comments below or send me a message.
