Decarbonising Eastenders, Manchester University and Stonehenge with Richard Smith, PS Planet
Ever noticed a footprint logo at the end of the credits of your favourite (British) TV show? It comes with the enigmatic name ‘Albert’, but who or what is Albert?
Many moons ago, I was asked to come and upskill the BBC’s Sustainability champions at a big event. I was in heaven as the keynote speaker was Ellen MacArthur, a long time hero of mine for her round the world sailing adventures, and she was talking about the forthcoming launch of her eponymous foundation to promote the circular economy. But the main purpose of the day was to take the BBC’s Albert carbon accounting/certification platform and open it to all British broadcasters via BAFTA.
That day I met the brains behind Albert, Richard Smith, now of PS Planet, and he joins me this week on the pod. In a freewheeling conversation, we discuss:
- The story behind Albert
- Sustainability in TV programming, from Eastenders to Blue Planet II
- Zero carbon versus net zero, and the area under the curve
- Matching your language to the audience (green jujitsu!)
- Sustainability challenges in Universities and visitor attractions
- The importance of joy, imagination and creativity in Sustainability
