Has the climate battle been Trumped? The choice is ours…
So this morning a large orange cloud hovers over the future of the planet. As predicted, Donald Trump used his inaugural address yesterday to withdraw from the Paris Agreement (again), declare an undefined “energy emergency” and pledge to “drill, baby, drill.” Already some have apparently thrown in the towel, suggesting the battle to stabilise our climate and bring a halt to biodiversity loss is over, but is it?
I’ve gone over the arguments why it (probably, hopefully…) won’t be as bad as some think on the podcast here, here and here. But fundamentally, it depends on what we decide to do. No politician ever mandated, designed, or even ‘allowed’ the digital revolution which has transformed our lives over the last 20 years – technology, market forces and consumer demand combined to change everything. Politicians have been left scrambling to keep up.
Likewise, no single politician can stop you making decisions to decarbonise your lifestyle. No single politician can stop renewables, batteries and other green technologies getting cheaper. No single politician can stop a huge corporation from decarbonising its global supply chain. We all have agency and we can all make change happen. It’s up to us.
